Take an All-New Phil Monahan Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge 01.13.17

Welcome to our unusual Friday edition of our weekly trivia challenge, in which we test your knowledge of all things fly fishing and where you might learn a thing or two about this sport we love. This was supposed to go up yesterday, but we had a full-on regional power outage at Orvis HQ. So here’s an all-new quiz, featuring ten questions about famous trout waters, insect ID, competition angling, and more.

Our last quiz saw a big leap in scores, with ten folks scoring 100%: Sandy Wright, David Moore, Alec, Dave F., Justin McDowell, Sig, Jay Rathore, Stephen Fitch, Andy S, and ChuckB. Six others missed just one question, and the most popular score drop a tic to 50%. The hardest question was about which material Lee Wulff used for wings (bucktail).

The winner of this week’s random drawing will receive a free download of the excellent new video “Modern Nymphing: European Inspired Techniques,” featuring Devin Olsen and Lance Egan.

The winner of our last quiz (as determined by random.org), and recipient of this great video was Adam Hanna, who who wrote” I don’t want a participation trophy,” but he’s getting one anyway.

So post your score below for a chance to win a video that will help you become a better nymph fisherman.

Good luck!

  1. You scored 90%! Someday I’ll get to Montana to fish the Palisades. Then I can achieve the ever elusive 100% on Phil’s quiz

  2. 60%
But I did know about about bucktail wings on Wulff’s. I read that he used bucktail because he thought Catskill dry flies looked anemic and didn’t float well!
