Take an All-New Phil Monahan Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge 08.18.16

Welcome to another edition of our weekly(ish) trivia challenge, in which we test your knowledge of all things fly fishing and where you might learn a thing or two about this sport we love. This week, it’s another new quiz that features ten questions all about fish taxonomy. Don’t worry: you don’t need to know the exact species name.

On the last quiz, there were four perfect scores, for the second week in a row: How about a round of kudos for Larry, Dan Stoff, Charlie, and Sharp Hook. There were eight 90% scores, a big improvement, and the most common score jumped up to a 70%!

Post your score and you could be catching cutthroats using some new flies, like our prize winner from a previous quiz.

The randomly chosen winner of this week’s quiz will receive an Orvis Klinkhammer Selection, featuring 10 Klinkhammer-style patterns.

The winner of our last quiz (as determined by random.org) was Jason, who blamed his poor showing on the heat.

So post your score below for a chance at this awesome prize.

Good luck!

  1. Great quiz this week! My quick thinking knowledge isn’t as good as it was in college. Still didn’t do bad.

  2. 30%, looks like it’s time to hit the books for me. Strike that, time to hit the river instead. The books can wait.

  3. 40%, with the only ones I didn’t guess on being the largemouth and smallmouth bass, and tarpon. So I went 1 for 7 on guessing, not so hot.

    1. So here’s the way to know:
      Char: Salvelinus
Not a Char, native West of the rockies: Oncorhynchus
Not a Char, native to Atlantic drainage/Europe: Salmo
      Bass: Micropterus

I’d have been lost if it started asking about whitefish and grayling.
