Take the Phil Monahan Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge 11.09.17

Welcome to the latest edition of our weekly trivia challenge, in which we test your knowledge of all things fly fishing and where you might learn a thing or two about this sport we love. This week, I’ve taken a classic quiz and added ten new questions. So, we’ve got 20 old-and-new questions about famous fly tiers and their creations. How much do you know about the tiers who invented some of your favorite patterns?

The last quiz, all about fish species, turned out to be quite a stumper, as just one person– Joseph Bartholomew–achieved a perfect score. “Guessing pays off . . . eventually,” he wrote. Nine people scored 90%, and the most common score jumped 15 points, to a 60%.

The winner of this week’s random drawing will receive a a copy of Dave Hughes’s new Essential Trout Flies: 50 Indispensable Patterns with Step-by-Step Instructions for 300 Most Useful Variations. In this new edition—with 1/3 new material, 20 additional patterns, and 300 variations—Hughes addresses the changes in fly preference over the last 15 years, with some old patterns dropped for new styles tied with new materials and tying techniques.

The winner of our last quiz (as determined by random.org), and recipient of Nick Curcione’s new Saltwater Edge: Tips and Tactics for Saltwater Fly Fishing, was Erick L., whose evaluation of his score was “Meh.”

So post your score below for a chance to win a great book.

Good luck!

  1. 80%. The Calcasieu Pig Boat by Tom Nixon… that’s a new one to me. Looks like a it’ll be a fun tie with room for some creative liberty! Thanks Phil!

  2. 95% — way better at flies than geography.

Did this one on my laptop, rather than phone, but technology design for the quiz still sucks. I had to restart the quiz once on my laptop and have trouble completing it at all on my phone. This is a major inhibitor in my participation.
