Take the Phil Monahan Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge 06.13.13

Welcome to another edition of our trivia challenge, where we test your knowledge of all things fly fishing and where you might learn a thing or two about this sport we love.

Here’s another collection of questions dealing with everything from river nicknames to fly-tying history to the lifespan of the brown trout.

The scores on last week’s Trivia Challenge leads one to believe that many of you found it tough. In all, there were just four 100%s and five 90%s, as well. I commend the one brave soul who posted his 0% score in hope of winning the book. Even a horrendous score doesn’t lower your chances of winning.

The randomly chosen winner of this week’s quiz will receive a signed copy of Tom’s book The Orvis Guide to Small Stream Fly Fishing. This is a great book for anyone who loves getting off the beaten path and chasing blue lines. It provides all the information for finding and fishing unspoiled gems found everywhere from wilderness areas to suburban backyards. Last week’s book winner (as determined by random.org) was Shelley Walchak, who scored 100% and loves books, on account of she’s a librarian.

So, take this week’s quiz, and no matter how well or poorly you do, post your score in the comments below to be eligible to win Tom’s book with his inspirational words on the title page.

Good luck!

    1. Joseph, The only real way to match an old rod to a line is to try it out. I like a 7wt. on my old HDH rod. The old rod reference is to line diameter not weight.

  1. Literally, no one can do worse than I did. I think I truly define the term amateur fly fisherman with a score of 0%.

  2. 60% is my worst ever. Although I take exception to the HDH question, the answer should have been 7 wt.

  3. I think next time I should just forego the quiz and say 20%. his is the score I have made on the last several quizzes.

  4. 60 percent–and that score has already received some doleful comments above. Still, the quiz is always fun. Thanks for putting it together, Phil!

  5. 60%. What bothers me is that one of my first fly lines was an HDH. Also I want Pete Kutcher to demonstrate the Voodo Cast. 😉

  6. Guessed at most of them. The only one I knew for sure was Lefty’s White deceiver….got a lowly 20%…..ouch!
