Take the Phil Monahan Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge 09.05.13

Welcome to another edition of our trivia challenge, where we test your knowledge of all things fly fishing and where you might learn a thing or two about this sport we love.

The last quiz was a tough one, with 20 questions of game-fish nicknames. Although there were no perfect scores, six of you came within a whisker, scoring 95%. (Congrats Zach, Sean, R.E. Cox, Chuck B., Mark P. and Richard Ellis!)

This week’s quiz features another twenty (20!) questions about trout flies. As with last week’s quiz, some of the patterns are regional, so don’t feel too bad if you don’t know them.

As usual, the randomly chosen winner of this week’s quiz will receive a signed copy of Tom’s book The Orvis Guide to Small Stream Fly Fishing. This is a great book for anyone who loves getting off the beaten path and chasing blue lines. It provides all the information for finding and fishing unspoiled gems found everywhere from wilderness areas to suburban backyards. Last week’s book winner (as determined by random.org) was Leonard Swintek.

So, take this week’s quiz, and no matter how well or poorly you do, post your score in the comments below to be eligible to win Tom’s book with his inspirational words on the title page.

Good luck!

  1. Well the ones I did know and used i obviously got right the others ugh need top spend time reading all the flies including those not used

  2. 90% oops on the RAINBOW warrior~ at least I was good on my local/regional flies!
    Tight Lines,
    Koz
    True North Trout

  3. 40%, considering i hadn’t heard of any of those. What happened to California Blondes, Half down stones,
bead head prince, wooly bugger etc?

  4. That’s what I love about this sport, there is always something new to learn. 75% with a couple lucky guesses. I’m kicking myself in the butt for missing the Bunion Bug. A River Runs Through It.

  5. 90% some lucky guesses. If I didn’t recognize it, I guessed salmon streamer.

Mr Rapidan is a nymph that Murray’s fly shop offers???

  6. I had heard of roughly 1/3 of those flies. Yet I still managed a 45%. While that’s better than 33%, I clearly did not fare too well guessing. Nice shout out for the Bunyan Bug btw.

  7. 65%…mmmm, not bad. Truly some local yokels in there. Besides my ‘crackle back’, the crackle backs I’ve see are nymphs!

  8. 100 % evidently i need to cultivate other facets of my life. and i believe the green butt skunk is indeed a steelhead wet
