Take the Phil Monahan Fly-Fishing Trivia Challenge June 20, 2013

Welcome to another edition of our trivia challenge, where we test your knowledge of all things fly fishing and where you might learn a thing or two about this sport we love.

You had to know that this one would come eventually, even though you dreaded it: the entomology quiz. Now, I know that knowledge of Latin names has nothing to do with fly-fishing success. But like it or not, fly-fishing literature is rife with taxonomies. So, why not check to see how much you know? If you score a 100% on this baby, you’ll have bragging rights for a long time, I assure you.

The scores on last week’s Trivia Challenge were down from the scores of the week before. In all, there were just two 100%—big ups to Peter Hawken and John Flandro, whose comments were actually right next to each other—and two 90%s, as well. I also applaud another self-confident soul who posted his 0% score in hope of winning the book. Even a horrendous score doesn’t lower your chances of winning.

The randomly chosen winner of this week’s quiz will receive a signed copy of Tom’s book The Orvis Guide to Small Stream Fly Fishing. This is a great book for anyone who loves getting off the beaten path and chasing blue lines. It provides all the information for finding and fishing unspoiled gems found everywhere from wilderness areas to suburban backyards. Last week’s book winner (as determined by random.org) was Vincent, who scored low enough that all he could say was, “Well!!!” But he still gets a free, signed book outta the deal.

So, take this week’s quiz, and no matter how well or poorly you do, post your score in the comments below to be eligible to win Tom’s book with his inspirational words on the title page.

Good luck!

  1. 90%…aaaag@#&*%#. I went to fast. I knew them all but checked the wrong box! I love a little Latin!

  2. My usual 50% with a lot of guesses. I was pleasantly surprised at how many I actually knew.

I’d be interested to see which question was answered correctly the most. It has to be the Baetis one, right?

  3. 100 % .. but Phil, have to talk to you about one of the questions next time I run into you … when the river drops to say 800 cfs … which might be awhile!

  4. 80% Tom was right, tie you own flies and learn more about the bugs as you go… Guessing helps also!

  5. 100% guessing, 1-in-4 chance on each question, should give me 25% correct. Since I couldn’t get 2.5 answers right, I rounded up to 3: 30%. Yay, statistics!

  6. 80%. Great quiz, one of the best yet. How about a major bug quiz per specis (mayfly, caddis, etc.)?

Maybe somone could help, I thought Dorothea was a sulpher?

  7. 80%, I shall double check the Diocomescus sp. question….
    love my macro-invertebrates…
    Tight Lines,
    Koz

  8. 100% – chuffed. Would I be able to match the fly (pattern) to the fly (insect)? Not a prayer. Just look at my catch record!

  9. 50% – Holy buckets! All that latin so early in the morning. Well I have to admit that I was pretty sure about #10 and just guessed at the rest.

  10. 40%. I can’t believe I got 40% when I guessed at all 10. Now back to some warm water Bass fishing…

  11. Oh boy! 70% solely because of all those nice folks over on Troutnut.com who actually know and use this stuff. Who knew it was catching?

  12. 50% on guesses. I was told to never mind the learning the Latin names, just match what is on with water with something of similar size, shape, and color from my box. There is my proof that I do what I am told.

  13. 90%. My one guess: fail. Reading all of those bugs books in my 20s has some ressidual value I guess.
