ACTION ALERT: Tell Your Representatives to Stop Wasting Money on Pebble Mine Permits

The mine itself is a terrible idea, and the infrastructure it would require would destroy pristine wilderness.

As we noted in last week’s Wednesday Wake-Up Call, California congressman Jared Huffman has introduced an appropriations amendment that would forbid the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from spending anymore taxpayer money on the flawed Pebble Mine permitting process.

Congressman Huffman’s Amendment 63 to the Energy and Water Appropriations Act (H.R. 2740) would bar the Corps from completing its environmental analysis for the Pebble mine. Specifically, the language would prohibit the Corps from finalizing the environmental impact statement. Huffman argues that the inadequate permitting process has allowed Pebble to inadequately characterize the risks at stake in Bristol Bay and leave the region in danger.

Despite more than a decade of opposition, the agency reviewing Pebble’s permit application is rushing the mega-project toward reality. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) released by the Corps of Engineers in February is the most important document of the permitting process. Unfortunately, the highly anticipated DEIS is extremely short and fails to account for all the mine’s potential impacts, leaving Bristol Bay in immediate jeopardy

It’s time to put an end to this process before the foreign mining company behind Pebble clears anymore hurdles. Let’s end this NOW.
