Tie an Elk-Hair Caddis with Tom, Live on Facebook This Afternoon!

It’s time for another exciting episode of “Fly Tying with Tom” on Facebook Live, TODAY at 3 p.m. (EDT) on the Orvis Fly Fishing Facebook page. From his home tying station, Tom will demonstrate how to tie the venerable Elk-Hair Caddis, originally created by Montana legend Al Troth.

For each of these fly-tying events–which happen every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday–we will announce the pattern and the recipe in the morning, so you can get everything in order to be ready to tie along with Tom. Here’s the recipe for today’s Elk-Hair Caddis:

Elk Hair Caddis
Hook: Standard dry-fly hook, sizes 10-18.
Thread: Brown or tan, 6/0 or 140-denier.
Rib: Fine gold wire.
Body Hackle: Brown.
Body: Tan fur dubbing.
Wing: Bull-elk hair.
