Tuesday Tip: How to Double-Haul

Welcome to our seventh installment of “Ask a Fly-Fishing Instructor,” starring our own Peter Kutzer, who works at the Manchester, Vermont, Fly Fishing School. A couple months ago, we asked you to
post some questions about your biggest casting problems.

Reader “Bill E.” wrote,

How about some help with hauling and double hauling?

In this lesson, Peter explains why the double haul is useful for adding distance to the cast and taking pressure off your casting arm and wrist. Then he demonstrates exactly what you need to do for a successful double haul, from the right timing to the proper length of your haul. You’ll learn why this is not just a cast for saltwater anglers, too. Once you’ve got the basics down, it’s time to put Pete’s lessons to work by practicing on your own lawn.

If you’ve got more questions for Peter, post them below, and we’ll address each casting problem in a new video.

  2. I’ve been watching Peter for about a month every day before I go out to practice. I’ve had a lot of very good instructors try to instruct me but I just couldn’t get it. Peter somehow got through to me.

I don’t have a chance in getting those waders owing to the outrageous videos these guys are showing us. Some awesome stuff .Truly amazing. I’m jealous. But Thanks anyway Peter. If you look at the situation, having learned the double haul, I have learned a whole lot more than just a pair of waders. As I said, thanks Peter.
