Video: Big Ouananiche! from Hooké

When we were hanging out in Montana last month, Fred Campbell of Hooké told me about the cool trip he was planning to the Laurentides region of Quebec to catch ouananiche, or landlocked salmon. Most anglers fish the area’s big lakes by trolling, but Fred was convinced that you could cast flies and still catch big fish. As this video shows, it took a lot of hard work, but they finally landed one of these beauties.

  1. We call ’em Kokanee over here in Oregon. Beautiful fish that fight hard! A number of our lakes have them in abundance, but I still am yet to catch one. 🙁

    1. A kokanee is a landlocked sockeye salmon. These are landlocked Atlantic salmon. Both are great game fish.
