Last year, many of us were introduced to the concept of fly fishing in Yemen through a fictional film, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, which really wasn’t about fishing at all. The whole concept of rearing Atlantic salmon in an artificially created river seemed crazy, but the movie never mentioned that Yemen has a saltwater side, too.

In the video above, angler Ray Montoya and his friend, Kamal, discovery an unknown flats fishery for bonefish on the Island of Socotra, off the coast of Yemen. According to Montoya,

It took most of our ten days on the island to finally crack them, but we did it. The question remains, are we the first fishermen to catch bonefish on the fly in Yemen? I think so.

Click here to read his long blog post on the expedition and what they found. It’s fascinating stuff.

Are these the first Yemen bonefish ever caught on a fly?
