Perfect hackles for tails are long, stiff, and match the collar hackles on the fly. The problem is that many modern dry-fly capes have gorgeous short-fiber feathers, but they lack the long-fiber feathers needed for tails. Tim suggests finding older hackles or locating a cape from one of the boutique hackle producers who still make capes with “spade hackles.”
