Kevin Compton is a fly tier and competitive angler from Cleveland, Ohio, who loves nymphing for trout. He created the Tungsten Torpedo, an attractor nymph that sinks quickly and looks really slim and buggy in the water.
In this video, by Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions, author and blogger Matt Grobert ties his version of the Tungsten Torpedo. How you put the materials on the hook is crucial to maintaining the slim profile, and Grobert explains exactly how to do it. His method for making a dubbing loop will help you tie lots of different patterns, too. There are a few uncommon materials here, so we’ve added links to places you can buy them.

Hook: Barbless wet-fly/nymph hook (here a Hanak H230BL), size 12.
Bead: Gold tungsten, 3.2mm.
Thread: Olive Benecchi, 12/0.
Tail: Medium Pardo Coq de Leon, 4-5 fibers.
Rib: Gold wire, .004-inch.
Abdomen: Sulky Sliver Metallic thread, black.
Collar: Jan Siman peacock dubbing.
Awesome to see my distant cousin, Kevin Compton, getting some props on the Orvis News for his fly tying skills! I’ve got a fly box of patterns from Kevin and although they catch fish like crazy, I’m always anxious about fishing them because they look so darn good and I don’t want to loose them!
