In this week’s great fly-tying how-to video, Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions shows you how to tie a super-simple egg pattern that features a drop bead. Egg flies usually work best when they’re fished right on the bottom, so having a pattern that snags less is important. The two-tone “body” of the fly offers contrast to catch a trout’s eye, as well. The best part is that tying this pattern requires no special skills at the vise; it’s something anyone should be able to tie.
Eagle-eyed anglers will note that Tim likes to attach this fly with a loop knot to offer more jiggy action in the water.

Hook: 3X-heavy grub hook (here, a Fulling Mill FM5115), size 12.
Head: Gold tungsten drop bead, 1/8-inch.
Thread: White, 6/0 or 140-denier.
Body: Apricot and Orange McFly Foam.
Adhesive: Head cement (here, Sally Hansen Hard-As-Nails).
Tools: Plunger-style hackle pliers, bodkin, whip-finish tool.
