Video: Opening Days in New Zealand

Here’s the first video of the season from former Trout Bum of the Week Matt Butler of Travel Truly, and it doesn’t disappoint. Featuring glorious landscapes and some stunning fish, “New Beginnings” is about shaking off the rust and getting your fly-fishing game back in shape. Here’s how Matt describes it:

It had finally come, the date that all New Zealand anglers count down as if they were children waiting for Christmas. On October 1st, the fly-fishing season began in New Zealand, and I had arranged a trip with Tyler to some of my favourite spots. Following a mild winter, we were looking forward to some great conditioned fish, and we got them, eventually. . . .

This video explores both sides of the equation: the first half is about when things don’t quite go your way, and the second when everything aligns and mayhem ensues. The passion for the sport drives us through the highs and lows. We don’t do this because it is easy!

  1. Do you live in New Zealand? If not where and what route from the states did you take? I,like the walk and wade aspect. We’re the streams all day hikes in or did you camp?
