Video: Potential World-Record Muskie on the Fly

If you’ve got a bunch of fly-fisher Facebook friends, you’ve probably already seen the photo below, of the incredible Muskie that Robert Hawkins—owner of Bob Mitchell’s Fly Shop in Lake Elmo, Minnesota—caught on Mille Lacs yesterday. The image has gone viral among anglers around the world. According to Hawkins’s Facebook post, he was on on the lake only because a couple of pals had an open spot on their boat. And as he tells the interviewer in the video above, when he saw the size of the fish, he said “three swear words in a row.” The fish measured 57 inches long, with a girth of 26.5 inches, which would put the weight at 50 pounds. Mille Lacs is Minnesota’s second-largest inland lake, about 100 miles north of Minneapolis.

    1. Apparently if you troll for muskies with a fly and a fly reel taped on a metal pole it counts as catching it on the fly.

  1. Ya that looks like something fishy is up with that setup. I’m sure there’s no rule against trolling a fly preventing it being a record, BUT… that’s not fly fishing.

  2. Good day! This post couldn’t be written any better! Reading this post reminds me of my good old room mate! He always kept talking about this. I will forward this page to him. Fairly certain he will have a good read. Many thanks for sharing!

  3. For all of you that are saying he caught it trolling can watch the video of him casting & strip setting on this musky. It’s on Bob Mitchell’s Fly Shop page. It’s a shame people can’t congratulate a fellow fisherman on the fish of a lifetime.
