Although George Daniel has made his reputation teaching anglers about Euro-nymphing and streamer fishing, like most Pennsylvania fly fishers, he also loves to catch smallmouths. In this video, he walks you through his time-tested techniques for rigging, pattern selection, and presentation. Perhaps his most important point is that you shouldn’t overwork your flies on the water. A popper may beg to be popped, but George argues that you must resist the temptation, as he prefers a much subtler way to impart action that will attract smallmouth strikes.
You are a really great teacher, George. You never forget what it was like to be a beginner. Excellent job covering the most overlooked topic in fly fishing: Line control, especially as it relates to the hookset.
Jake Villwock wrote an excellent book on Smallmouth which goes much deeper than you get here. I read it in two days!
