Video Pro Tips: How to Fight Big Fish in Salt Water

Here’s a bunch of tips from the chapter called “Offshore/Near-Shore Fly Fishing” on the Orvis Fly Fishing Learning Center. Fighting big fish in the salt is a lot different from fighting trout or warmwater fish, so it’s worth your time to learn the basics before you leave the dock. Your three main concerns are: 1. tiring the fish quickly; 2. protecting your fly rod; and 3. controlling slack—avoiding slack most of the time, but adding it when a fish jumps. Master these skills, and you’ll have your fish boatside, ready for a quick photo and a clean release.

  1. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Seeing your tips visually really helps us learn. I have never landed a big fish from a boat in the ocean, but when that day comes, your video will be in my memory. Keep it up Tom.

  3. Are there any past videos and god reading material for surf fishing on the fly? I moved to Florida and now have an 8wt and plan to fish in the waves.
