In this helpful how-to video from Ben Sittig, a.k.a Huge Fly Fisherman, he talks about something that many novice anglers–and even some more experienced fly fishers–struggle with: mending. He does a good job of explaining the basic whys and hows, and the demonstrations are clear.
If you want a little more in-depth information, check out our previous posts “How to Mend Fly Line” and “How to Mend Your Line for a Better Drift.” For learning the reach cast and more, check out Pete Kutzer’s “How to Make an Aerial Mend.” Getting the hang of proper mending technique and timing is a big step in an angler’s development.

When would you “mend” downstream?
You mend downstream if there is slower water between you and tour fly. If the fly gets ahead of the line, it will drag, so you mend downstream.
