Video: Tube-Fly Basics, Part 2

Here’s another installment in a series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video will teach a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.

In the second part of a new series on tube flies, Tim explains the various kinds of tubes available, for a variety of angling situations–from plastic tubes for lightweight patterns to metal tubes that will help get a fly down in the water column. He also shows how a “hook holder” tube is used to keep the hook in place at the rear of the tube body of a pattern.

The “hook holder” tube (left) fits over the main tube to hold the hook in place.
