Video Tuesday Tips: Understanding Fly-Tying Hackles

A lot of fly tiers know what to do with the feathers that they find hanging on the wall at the fly shop, but how much do you know about where they actually come from? I saw the Facebook video about Cree hackle below and found it fascinating, which reminded me of the video above, in which Dr. Tom Whiting of Whiting Farms, shows you on a rooster where each kind of hackle comes from. And then I couldn’t resist throwing in the final video from my pal Dave Klausmeyer, which also features the late, great “Uncle” Dick Talleur.

It’s all great information, and if you love to tie flies, they are fun videos to watch on a sleety day here in the 802. I will tell you from experience, that Dr. Tom can talk about chicken science and genetics all day long, if you’re willing to listen.
