My office today looks a lot different than my “office” last October. That’s because this fall I am saddled up to a desk next to Mr. Phil Monahan (notorious editor of orvisnews.com), whereas last year I was walking the rolling hills of central Montana every day with my bird dogs, as we guided hunters for sharptail grouse, Hungarian partridge, and pheasants. Although I love my new job (and my new office neighbor), I missed Montana and had to get back.

Last week, I returned with my wife, Els, to the old stamping grounds about an hour east of Great Falls and hunted with a good friend, Chad Boedecker, who guides with PRO Outfitters. We spent two days with great dogs in great country sharing great times. With 100 percent wild birds, this land will always represent the ultimate, authentic upland-bird hunting experience.

PS: Sorry for the lack of action shots—my camera was in my pocket for every point and flush, as I needed to take advantage of every minute in the field before returning to work.
