Playing in the Yard

Mating pairs of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) spend the winter months living in dens dug into the ground. These dens usually have an oval entrance, which allows quick exit at full speed, and they are usually built within a few hundred yards of water. Kits are usually born in late March or April, and the average litter is four to six. The kits first leave the den at three to four weeks, usually staying nearby, as the parents roam for food.

This litter of five was born in a den about a dozen feet off the sidewalk that leads from the parking lot to Orvis headquarters in Sunderland, Vermont. Orvis associates thrilled to daily sightings of the kits playing and fighting, and the young ones were quite curious.
