After rescuers saved nearly 300 dogs from a Northwest Arkansas puppy mill last week, authorities want people to know that the public can help stop this horrifying breeding practice. Since the raison d’être of a puppy mill is to make money, cutting off funding is the key. The Arkansas mill was selling dogs on the Internet, through a website called, ironically, The Perfect Puppy of NWA. (The site is now down.)
As you’ll hear in the video above, one state legislator is trying to pass legislation that will create a registry for breeders, which will help the public identify legitimate operations. And he pulls no punches when it comes to puppy-mill operators: “I believe they need to go to jail.”
